1/4/15 - Final Assignment!

Global Education and Travel

For this week's assignment, I want you to compare and contrast two different cultures' education paying close attention to their emphasis on travel.  It is ok for one of these cultures to be your native country.

To properly examine this issue, you will need to find scholarly evidence to support your thoughts. Mission statements from prestigious schools and universities are great references, and so are journal articles that have published research in this area. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. Make sure to properly quote your sources and not plagiarize them.  "Paraphrasing" is putting what others say into your own words and is a great way to avoid plagiarism.

These pages will help you:

At the end of your essay, please list all sources used (format is not important for this paper, just a list).  Concepts in this topic can include, but are not limited to: gap year, study abroad programs, travel scholarships, foreign languages, cultural tolerance, etc.

This final essay is due on Monday, February 9th @ 8:30am.

Good luck!

Creative Writing Time!

Well done on writing such great essays on corporate outsourcing, a tough subject.  For a break, and a kickstart to SUPERBOWL WEEKEND, you will write a creative story for a peer editing lesson on Friday.

You may choose from one of these topics:

1.  Write a SCARY STORY!  Use as many details as you can to make the story frightening and gruesome!

2.  Write an ADVENTURE STORY!  Using well developed time frames will make an Adventure Story truly exciting.

3.  Write a LOVE STORY!  Character development keeps readers involved and committed to the people in your love stories.

4.  Write a FAMILY TALE!  Use family dynamics to write about many different characters at once.  Think The Earps (Wyatt Earp); Romeo and Juliet; Family DRAMA :)

Be creative and keep the reader's attention.  You will be reading a fellow classmates writing on Friday:)  It is very important that you attend class FRIDAY morning.

This assignment is due by FRIDAY at 8:30am.

Good Luck!

Corporate Outsourcing

This week's writing is about the impact corporate outsourcing has on local and global businesses and communities. This is ultimately a persuasive essay that will conclude with you persuading your reader to share your opinion on weather outsourcing is a positive or negative practice.  It is not necessary to publish your brainstorming.

Brainstorming (brief notes):
I. Research Corporate Outsourcing
- Define it
- find 2 examples of it, one positive, one negative
- list pro's and con's of each example
- find details about the impact it had (locally, globally, personally...any impact)

II. Writing

Intro:
Examples' history
Briefly summarize a few pro's/con's of how each example operates and their impact on the immediate and larger communities.

Body:
Details on why's / how's / where's

Conclusion:
Call to action - this is where you will persuade your reader to support your opinion on corporate outsourcing. There may be specific actions one can take to support these opinions. If so, how can I as the reader get involved in these actions. Make me agree with you!

This will be due on Monday, 1/26/15. Remember to "Save" if you're not finished and "Publish" once ready to turn in.

Good Luck!

1/7/15 - Welcome C1.3 Students!

Hello!!

Welcome to the start of a new and exciting term at EF.  In this advanced class you will be doing a writing assignment every week and here is where you will find everything you need.  Every time we have class in the language lab, the first thing you will do is log onto your blogger account and check MY blog for the week's assignment.  The current assignment will always be titled with the current date, include descriptions of the entire assignment, and its due date.  Failure to publish the assignment by the due date will result in an "F" for the week.  Writing is an integral part of this level and if you apply yourself to these assignments your writing WILL improve dramatically!

Each assignment should be written in propper Essay format:  NO CONTRACTIONS, formal language, correct punctuation and paragraph format.  The creative writing assignments, however, will have a bit more freedom in the language used, but please work hard on making it a literary style and not giberish :) .

The title of your post will ALWAYS BE THE DUE DATE OF THE ASSIGNMENT.

I cannot see your post until you "publish" it.  Push "save" to continue working on it later and "publish" when you are finished with the assignment.

1st assignment:  due Before class on Monday, 1/12/15. <--------------Your Post's Title: 1/12/15

This week's writing assignment is about Charity Organizations. (Charity - generous actions or donations to aid the poor, the ill, or the helpless) For this assignment you will research an organization that exists to perform or support charitable actions. Brainstorming is a great way to organize your thoughts before writing. I will offer many forms of brainstorming throughout this term.

Brainstorming: Listing (Simple, to the point, no need for complete sentences)
-Name of charitable organization
-Identify the population served (who do they help?)
-What ways do they attempt to help this population?
-What are some of this organization's current projects?
-What are future hopes/goals for this organization and the population it serves?
(You don't need to publish this part; it's for your organization.)

Writing:
3-4 paragraphs:

1st Paragraph: Introduction - Who is your organization, Who do they serve, and how do they serve them?

2nd-3rd Paragraph: Current projects and goals, statistics and testimonials (testimonials - stories of the organization's successes or failures), and the organization's hopes for the future.

Last Paragraph: Conclusion - your opinion on the organization's work and the work of the particular kind of charity as a whole, your opinions on the future of this kind of charity, and an urge to your readers to aid in the charitable work that is being done.

NOTES - You should not write "I am now going to write about..." that is an incorrect introduction. Introducing topics should be done with attention getting devices such as rhetorical questions, intriguing statistics, stories and facts, or other interesting transitions into the topic.
